Wood floor installations and repairs in Manhattan are unique as the vast majority of them take place in apartment buildings.  Many decisions come into play when selecting an appropriate wood floor: front door clearance, durability, coloration, graining and so on.

101 West 79th Street

This project involved a full rip out and subsequent installation of engineered wenge flooring throughout the apartment with pre-finished 12 X 12 cork tiles in the kitchen.

(Left) Completed bedroom with new wenge top-floor.

(Top Right) Wenge butted up agianst pre-finished cork tiles; border between cork/wood  made with 1/4” metal strip.

(Bottom Right) This picture - with a lot of direct light on the floor - shows some of the smooth,  distinct graining of the material.  The coloration of the material is typically a dark, espresso brown; the light n this shot is a bit misleading.

(Left) 31 Jane Street - Pre-finished Brazilian walnut - Ipe - installed on  a diagonal.

(Center) 3 West 13th Street - solid, pre-finished, horizontal grain bamboo; installed all 9 floors.

(Right) Bayside Queens - 6” red oak, water-popped with 1 coat ebony stain; finished/installed matching oak base molding.  This was part of a restoration of a Spanish Tudor.

155 Perry Street

This project was an installation of 6” white oak with a custom-mixed gray/white pickling stain and 4 coats of Traffic water-based urethane to avoid yellowing.  We typically recommend glueing and nailing down solid materials 4” or wide when installing to minimize issues with gapping.

These close-up shots (Right) show the grey/blue coloration that sometimes come out when using just a pickling stain on white oak without a bleach.

Bice Restaurant (54th Street & 5th Avenue)

This installation was an overnight project that involved a full rip-up and install starting at midnight and finishing up at 9AM the following day.  The materials used are alternating solid, pre-finished Santos Mahogany and clear maple.

The floor was installed on a diagonal throughout and in the bottom right-hand picture above you see how pieces were mitered to follow the edge of the bar; a Santos Mahogany shoe molding was installed a long the periphery of the bar to cover the expansion joing
